A ice skating dress can only be classified as such if you look dressed on the ice. Form fitting is important, since the judges need to see the technical and dance moves, but you will want to be able to move freely without being afraid of something falling out. A dress that is too risque only takes away from the performance. It is possible to actually lose points for being too revealing.

Embellishments
Sparkly gems, ruffles, beading and flowing fabric can highlight your routine and make the dress reflect your personal style. Colors are important, choose a dress that makes you shine on the ice. Certain colors will pull out the vibrancy of your being, while others make you look sick or drab. Know which is which, the best way is to simply ask a friend, or take a photo of yourself in different colored outfits so that you can judge for yourself.

Fabric choices
Dresses come in fabrics of all kinds, from plush velvet to stretch satin. Lycra is a common component, necessary for the stretch factors. Lighter skirts made of netting are often attached and this also makes a nice effect.

Styles
Competition outfits are really only limited by the imagination. Strapless outfits, one sleeve numbers and full long sleeved bodices are all classic styles that can be interpreted in many different ways. In general, figure skating dresses are short, so that the leg can be free to do all the athletic moves without fear of catching on the fabric.
