New Materials For Running Shoes

The earliest running shoes were just leather sandals. Used by messengers in Rome, they offered more protection than bare feed, but not much. Nowadays manufactures like Nike, Fila, and New Balance offer space age materials like nylon, Kevlar, and new types of leather to provide comfort and protection in your running shoes. Whether you’re a casual jogger, a weekend runner, or a long distance champion, these new materials will help give you a safe, comfortable stride.
On most new running shoes, leather and suede are used on the upper part as decoration and trim. They can stop wear on the shoe in places that need it and also provide a little attractiveness. Some models don’t have any suede or leather at all. Some makers use suede or leather on their low end models while the super light models meant for professionals have only light synthetic materials. These materials, like nylon, are durable but extra light so that the shoe doesn’t hold the wearer back.
Most runners know the problems that sweaty feet can cause. Not only are they gross and smelly, but improper air circulation can cause blisters and other problems. Aside from wearing a good pair of socks, your shoes should be breathable and circulate air easily. Some shoes have special air systems where air is allowed to circulate through the shoe. But you don’t really need anything that fancy — simple breathable nylon mesh panels on the side will do nicely for most people.
As for the soles, most are still made of rubber and some plastic. Tread patterns have gotten more sophisticated, though, with wavey patterns engraved in the soles giving better traction on different types of surfaces. The part of the shoe between the sole and your foot is a cushion, sometimes made of polyurethane foam or a special gel made especially to displace and disperse weight. Shoes like the New Balance 993 have special foam cushioning to ease the stress on feet and knees to keep you safe from injury.
Other shoes like the Reebok Easytone have specially shaped soles that are designed to help you burn calories and tone at the same time. These shoes are becoming quite popular with young women.
