Picking the best engagement ring these days is such a tough job. Even if you know that you would like to buy a diamond solitaire ring, there are still a few factors to consider. What metal should the band be made from, platinum, white or yellow gold? Which diamond cut would look best, a round cut or marquise perhaps? Thankfully, the celebrities can help us out a little, as both Mariah Carey and Jessica Alba have been snapped wearing their asscher cut engagement rings. This should guide us in the right direction, along with the fact that Charlotte from “Sex and the City” was also presented with an asscher cut diamond engagement ring in the show.
For some people, the asscher cut gemstones look like they are emerald cut, but this is not strictly true. Asscher cut diamonds are square in shape, whereas emerald cuts are rectangular. It doesn’t help that sometimes you will find asscher cut referred to as “square emerald cut”. The other assumption that people make is that this cut is something new, as it has gained popularity in recent years. However, it is actually over a hundred years old, having been developed in the Netherlands in the early 20th century by the Asscher brothers.
Today the same family still owns and controls the Asscher Diamond Company, although it is now called the Royal Asscher Diamond Company, after Queen Juliana gave it the royal seal of approval in 1980, an accolade which prompted them to develop a new cut. The Royal Asscher cut has its similarities to the traditional one, but involves a lot more precision and gives a more symmetrical result.
Although the shape of an asscher cut diamond looks like it is a square, the corners are actually cut off, so that it forms an irregular octagon. What these extra cuts do is draw your attention into the depths of the gemstone. This beautiful cut is just perfect for a solitaire diamond engagement ring, or perhaps as the central stone on a trilogy ring, nestled between two round cut diamonds.
In recent years, more and more couples have looked into the past for their engagement rings, opting for antique rings rather than modern ones. However, the ever-increasing popularity of asscher cut diamond rings has meant that you will have an almost impossible task finding a genuine ring with this cut of diamond now. The majority has been bought and is held by collectors, so they have become a real rarity. But there is a wide range of modern asscher cut engagement rings made in the antique style, so you can still buy a ring that looks wonderful and romantic, even if it’s not a relic of the past.
