Should I Buy a Wool or Mohair Sweater?

The two most popular options for winter sweaters are ones made from wool and mohair. But which fabric is the best for your money. Here is a comparison of both of these fabrics so you can make an informed decision.
The first thing that you will want to look for in your sweater is comfortability. Here mohair excels. Wool contains tiny scales and each of its fibers that helps the sheep out in the wild, but irritates anyone with sensitive skin. On the other hand, mohair has no scales, so even a fuzzy mohair sweater will simply feel soft and gentle against almost anybody’s skin.
The next thing to look at is how warm the sweater will keep you. Here, mohair excels again. Wool is a very warm fabric, but it has one big weakness. When it gets wet it sucks the heat right away from your body. This is because wool has thick fibers that transmit heat really well. Mohair, on the other hand, has thinner, hollow fibers that don’t transmit heat and therefore don’t wick away the heat from your body when it’s cold.
A third aspect to look at is how durable the fabric is. Mohair wins for a third time. Mohair is actually stronger than steel of the same diameter and resists shrinking, wrinkling, and stretching. Anyone that has owned a wool sweater and accidentally popped it into the dryer will be able to tell you the problems inherent in shrinking wool.
The final thing that you will have to look at is price. Here, wool wins. Mohair is a better fabric overall than wool, but this comes at a price. It’s also much more expensive. When you’re looking for a sweater, you’ll have to weigh these options. If you’re on a budget and don’t necessarily need the best sweater for your money, wool may be the way to go. However, if you can spend a little bit more money, having a mohair sweater that you can use for years to come is a much better option.
