The ALICE military backpack is still in use at this time. Although it seems the MOLLE issue pack is slowly taking its place. This backpack was used to replace older versions of heavier backpacks and was created in 1973. The word ALICE stands for All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment. Some of the older backpacks before ALICE was created weighed as much as five pounds empty. The ALICE was created to lighten the load even more, which it did making an empty backpack weigh only three pounds. That two pound difference is quite a bit considering what all conditions these soldiers have to go through on a mission.

There is so much that has to go into a military backpack and yet they have to be made to weight as little as possible. But at the same time have to be made to be extremely durable. The ALICE backpack was created with very wide shoulder straps which are supposed to keep some of the pressure off the shoulders. These bags are made of nylon which is also waterproof. These packs have components that the soldiers really liked and they continue to use these packs even today.

The soldiers have various items in this pack which include a firearm and ammunition, field first kit, a canteen, and a change of clothes. They will also carry any other item relevant to their mission. These packs were supposed to be replaced in 1988 but due to the fact that the military really like them it made the change very slow. These packs can be found at most military stores. The packs are no longer produced by the military but they are likely to be found in any surplus store. Even after years to come the ALICE backpack will be available to find. It would take years before there are no more available to be found.
