Are you looking to kick off the New Year by trying something new and different? Are you looking for a way to get out into the great outdoors with the family without spending a whole lot of money? What about getting in shape… everyone is looking at that in one way or another after the holiday feasting. Well, the good news is you can do all of this very simply and inexpensively through the great sport of snow shoeing.
Why would anyone want to go snowshoeing? Simple – it’s a ton of fun! In addition, it is very easy to learn and just about anyone can do it. You don’t need a lot of special equipment (though obviously you will need snow shoes), and it will open up an entirely new world of outdoor exploration to you. Also, if you’re not too sure about it but are curious enough to give it a try, there are plenty of places where you can rent snowshoes for a day for just a few bucks.
Other than the snowshoes themselves, you’ll want to be sure you have good cold weather clothing before you head out. This means everything from your head to your toes; a good warm hat, long underwear, preferably a few layers of clothes under a good, weather resistant outwear shell, warm, weather resistant pants, some good gloves or mittens (again, if you can layer a thin pair under a waterproof outer pair, this is an excellent way to go), and finally some good quality warm thermal socks and most importantly, some water proof footwear. While snowshoeing can be a lot of fun and you will be surprised at how warm it gets you due to the physical exertion, nothing will ruin your day faster than a pair of wet, icy cold feet! And all too often, it is the feet that get neglected when it comes to winter, cold weather clothes. You can learn more about socks for cold weather activities at thermalsocks.org.
