3 Swimming Pool Dangers

While most people think of fun and recreation when they think of their swimming pool, the sad fact is a swimming pool can contain a litany of different risks.  Therefore, in an attempt to educate the public better, this section will discuss several potential swimming pool risks.

First, slippery pool decks can be a hotbed of danger.  Since the pool decks are located right next to the water, they often get very slippery.  In addition to the water making them slippery, algae can also develop on these surfaces, which only compounds the problem.  If you want to minimize the possibility of slipping, you can power wash you decks on an annual basis.

The second danger of swimming pools is pool slides.  Think about it for a minute.  These structures, which can range from three feet in height to eight feet in height, become extremely slippery when they get wet.  What’s worse is that these structures are usually located above concrete.  Hence, if a child was to fall off a slide, there is an opportunity for them to bang their heads on the concrete.  To make matters even worse, most children are oblivious to this danger.  As a result, some of the horseplay around the pool that we have observed has made us cringe in fear.

The last danger that we will discuss today is diving boards.  The use of a diving board can significantly increase the chance of a young swimmer experiencing either head trauma or trauma to the spine.  This is due to the shallow depth of the pool where a diving board may be installed.  Regardless of your pool’s depth, we highly discourage people from using diving boards.

As we have shown, there are numerous risks of owning a backyard swimming pool.  If you use a little prevention (i.e. washing down your pool decks) and common sense (not using either pool slides or diving boards), you can easily reduce a lot of potential injuries.
