Transitioning Nautical Bedding from Summer to Fall

For many of us who live near the shore our home decor centers around the sea and an ocean motif. We may have rope designs in throw pillows in the family room or perhaps lantern style lighting throughout the house. Our bedrooms reflect our love of all things nautical by the use of starfish as a wall decor or a trunk at the foot of our beds.
Nautical bedding is one of the most effective ways to bring our beach environment inside. During the summer months we generally select the lighter shades of blues for our decor. Red, white and blue are traditional colors for the ship’s theme. After Memorial Day the accent is on the lighter colors which we enjoy throughout the summer. However, after Labor Day the tendency is to trend towards darker shades. One of the easiest ways to change our bedroom decor is with careful selection of bedding.
As mentioned, using a light blue shade during the summer is quite common. If that should be the preference, it is suggested that one look for a comforter or bedding set that incorporates a smaller dark red or brown stripe. When selecting nautica we must remember that when we speak of striped bedding we are referring to irregular stripes that vary in width and frequency. Bedding ensembles that incorporate a single brown stripe or two or perhaps a navy blue stripe or even a dark red one on a baby blue background could be used year round.
To transform the decor from summer to winter, one could select matching brown sheets and pillow cases to accent the darker brown in the comforter. A throw pillow or pillow sham could bring the decor into fall. There is little need to change the entire comforter set if there is one stripe that is a darker shade that can be picked up by accessories. Selecting a cotton blanket in a warm brown to place upon the foot of the bed or fold on the trunk top at the foot of the bed could be enough to make the seasonal transition.
