There are many different kinds of termites. The termites with wings are the reproductives or also called the flying termites. This is the most commonly seen type of termite. The flying termites are the termites that reproduce to form new colonies or to continue to build their colony. A flying termite resembles a flying ant. The flying termites are very sensitive to light and will try to enter your home where ever there is a crack that light shines through. These termites will often be seen in a swarm that looks like a big cloud. Because of these swarms, they are also called termite swarmers. When you see these termites, that will mean that there is a colony of termites somewhere nearby. These termites are seen when the weather starts to warm up.

Flying termites can start a new colony very easily. Each colony will have a primary king and queen termite for the reproduction. They also usually have secondary termites to help with the reproduction to build a bigger colony. The queen will lay the eggs and help to take care of the colony until enough workers are formed to takeover the care of the colony. The queen termite can live for about ten years. During the termites young stages in life, they can transform into different types of termites depending on the types that the colony is in the most need of.

The colony is made up of three different castes. These castes are the flying termites that reproduce, the workers which is what causes the damage, and the soldiers that protect the colony. Although the flying termites are not the ones that cause the damage, these winged termites are usually the first sign that you may notice to tell you that you have an infestation. These termites shed their wings once they start to reproduce.
