How to Rabbit Proof Your Home

While rabbits enjoy the reputation of being gentle docile creatures, anyone who has ever had a pet rabbit knows how much mess that can make. The worst part is, you can’t get mad at your rabbit because it will always look so cute and cuddly. Sometimes all you can do is stare at the damage done and regret not taking steps to rabbit-proof your house.
The first step to making your house safe for a rabbit is to find a nice cage to act as its home base. Your rabbit will probably not be spending all of its time in the cage, but when it does you want it to be safe and secure. So get an indoor rabbit cage that is large enough to allow it to move around, and you’ll probably want something with a side door so it can move in and out of the cage freely.
The problems really begin when the rabbit comes out of the cage so if you can, section off a portion of the room for the rabbit itself. If you don’t and choose to let your rabbit run all over the house, you will soon find chewed up carpet and gnawed wires everywhere. So pick a room that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty and designate it as your rabbit room. Inside that room you will want to have as little as possible for the rabbit to chew on. So that means no wood, carpet, or wires. It also helps to give your rabbit some alternatives, so go ahead and throw in a toy or two for your rabbit to munch. Basically you will want to make everything in this section of space chew-proof, and if you can do that both you and your rabbit will be the happiest. As for other messes, it’s entirely possible to litter train your rabbit using the cage. So it might take a bit of time, but eventually you and your rabbit will learn to meet each other’s expectations.
