Roof gutters are meant for one thing, to channel water off the roof to an appropriate end point. It could be a hole in the ground, a sewer drain or a collection barrel… The water’s got to end up somewhere. Good guttering is what makes this possible and there are lots of choices for you to consider.

There is steel, either galvanized or painted, and there are lots of color options for this material. There’s also vinyl (plastic PVC), aluminum and copper. The aluminum can be natural silver or painted any color. It’s good for color coordinating. You can even get stone, concrete and wood gutters if you look hard enough.

Another option is the newer ‘seamless’ gutters. They also come in a rainbow of colors and are custom cut right at the job site. Seamless gutters, with no joints in the long, straight runs, should leak less and require less maintenance. A complete guttering system will include good downspouts and the necessary ends and elbows for the job.

If you browse the Internet you’ll find some good sites to learn about some options and how to create something unique, if that’s your thing. You may decide to collect the rainwater for use later, like during a drought for example. Whenever there’s a water shortage your trees and plants would gladly accept some second hand rainwater for refreshment.

There are many things that can be done with the water collected by the gutters. You could use it to fill up your fish pond. You could use it to activate a water feature. The options are many. Use your imagination.

Rain guttering on a house is just about a necessity. If you’ve seen houses without them you know what a mess the water makes coming off the roof. Just decide how functional and how fancy you want to get and have at it!
