How To Cook Elaborate Meals Without Trashing Your Kitchen

For many people, they don’t want to cook fancy meals simply because they don’t want to have to clean up afterward.  It’s not that they don’t have the skill or ability to do it, it’s because their kitchen looks like a bomb went off once they’re done!  In this post I want to share some of my restaurant management experience with keeping a restaurant kitchen during the peak hours of business.

The easiest way to prevent a mess is to clean as you go.  If you’ve ever spent any time working in a restaurant you’ve heard this phrase thrown around thousands of times.  It really means that if you make a mess, big or small, pick it up as soon as you’ve finished the task that you’re working on.  If you’re dicing onions and some of them get onto the counter, wipe the counter down immediately afterward.  It helps to have a dish or bar towel in your pocket while cooking or prepping so that it’s always right there and ready.

Another tip is to use all of the free time that you have to knock out a few dishes.  If you’re sweating your diced onions and have a few minutes while they’re on the stove, wash a few dishes.  It’s not hard to give the saute pan a quick toss in while washing dishes.

There’s also a rather new tool that allows you to keep your cookbooks up and off the counter and keep them neat and tidy.  A cookbook holder will do just this.    They work to keep your kitchen neat and tidy during the entire process, and make cooking easier my giving you easy reference.  Cookbook holders are available in most kitchen supply stores, as well as online.

Cooking should be an event in your household.  It’s almost as much fun as eating is and following the simple steps that are outlined above will help you take a lot of the extra cleanup work out of it.  Cook on, my friends!
