If you want some expert advice the best thing to do is ask an expert. We wanted to know more about replacing sash windows so we talked to some experts to know whether or not replacing or repairing sash windows is the better idea.
One expert told us that often you will have to make a decision based on the condition of the windows. ‘Homeowners can be very attached to old character sash windows even if they are only single glazed and even though they are costing them money to keep the home warm’, he said. ‘The decision as to whether to repair them or replace could depend on how damaged the timber has become after years of wear and tear. If the timber is rotted then it might be advisable to go for replacement windows’.
Another expert pointed out that old sash windows do not have the same quality locks as more modern units. ‘This can be an issue because of the security that people want when they are at home or when they are away’, he explained. ‘Modern quality replacement windows will have strong sash window locks built into the frames and this will make it harder for an intruder to break into the residence’.
It was also mentioned that many homeowners have busy lives and that the maintenance of sash windows can be an issue, this is another reason why replacement windows may be preferred over older timber windows that even if they are upgraded will still require painting every few years. ‘uPVC sash windows are virtually maintenance free and certainly do not need to be painted for their lifetime’, a window installer told us. ‘This suits people that are working all week as they really do not relish having to do jobs such as window painting during their time off’.
