Country Kitchen Valances

If you have a country kitchen, you want to make it as welcoming and friendly as possible, to be truly the heart of your home, where friends and family are happy to visit. One way to make your kitchen seem more welcoming is to add some softer fabric elements, among the hard wooden cabinets and tiled floors and walls, by putting up window valances and curtains at your windows. When you start looking for kitchen curtains, you will see there are many tiered curtain sets made for kitchen windows, and most of these are particularly suited to country kitchens.

These curtain sets are generally sold as separate coordinating elements. The first element is a cafe curtain, which is meant to cover the lower part of the window and provide privacy during the day without blocking out too much light by having the whole window covered. The second element is something called an “inset valance” which is similar to a standard gathered valance covering the top of the window and the third element are side swags, which cover the side edges of the inset valance and fall softly in folds part way down the sides of the windows.

These sets are generally in easy care cotton, which is just as well as kitchen valances and curtains need to be laundered frequently. The designs often have an attractive matching border to the edges of both the cafe curtain and the valance. You can also get sets composed entirely of lace or cotton gingham and the latter is particularly suited to a country kitchen with its home spun look.

If you prefer not to use one of these sets, one idea, if your kitchen is not overlooked, is to use a floral valance with a traditional pleated or gathered top, covering the top of the window, and then to use a simple roller blind in the evening for privacy. You can tuck the roller blind away at the top of the window behind the valance and out of site during the day and this means you get maximum sunlight into your kitchen, but your window still looks good topped with a decorative valance.
