Gray is a color that you may not have thought about for your interior. Because it is generally considered a dull and depressing color we tend to think of gray as something to avoid yet in the right situation it can look lovely and be life enhancing rather than spirit reducing. Gray is very soft and easy on the eye and it provides a neutral backdrop for more challenging colors. Here are some of the ways you can use gray to make a great color scheme.

Mixed with White or Cream

Silvery gray mixed with white or cream has a calming effect on a room and it gives the space a touch of elegance too. It is best used in a room which gets plenty of sun so that you can make the most of its cooling effect. It is best to use white or cream on large areas such as walls and to use gray for details. Think of a gray cashmere wool throw over a cream sofa and a gray pottery jug full of spring flowers or even a velvety gray carpet as a neutral touch on the floor.

Slate Gray and Jade or Lilac

Slate generally has a touch of blue in it and this gives it depth and color. Slate tile flooring is wonderful used in the kitchen, conservatory or bathroom where it adds both color and texture. Slate gray mixes well with the green blue shade of jade in a kitchen and with a medium lilac tone in a bathroom.

Graphite and Chrome

Graphite is a dark gray which looks good in more masculine, minimalist settings where furniture and fittings are streamlined. It works well with chrome and glass furniture and accents may be added with textured black rugs and cushions.

Pale Gray, Lemon and White

This unusual color scheme works very well in a formal living room in a dark part of the house. Walls are lightened with yellow, paintwork in white, sofas in palest gray and curtain fabrics a mixture of all three colors.
