Cast iron radiators are generally considered the best traditional radiators. They are usually considered the best because of their remarkable ability to retain heat. Cast iron is a very dense, heavy metal that has a lot of mass. The more mass a metal has, the more heat output it is capable of. Although the cast iron makes the radiator heavy and cumbersome to transport and install, they are still considered the most efficient.
As with any piece of equipment that you install in your home it is important to have a basic understanding of how the unit works so you can ensure the safety of your family. A cast iron radiator only has a few parts. Radiators that are steam or water powered have pipes that connect to the wall. These pipes transport the steam or water from the boiler to the radiator. There are also a number of coils that make up the body of the radiator. The more coils a unit has, the more effective it is in heating a room. This is because with more coils you expose more surface area and the more surface area that is exposed the more heat is transferred to the room. Obviously this increase in heat transfer increases the efficiency of the unit. It is also important to keep in mind that these units get very hot. It is possible to be burned by these units if you come into longer than momentary contact with them. It is especially important to ensure they are properly protected if you have small children or pets in your home if you do not want your heat source to be a safety hazard in your home.
When looking to buy traditional radiators it is important to remember to check the efficiency of the unit you are buying to ensure that it will provide adequately for your heating needs.
