Formal dresses are a part of every woman’s wardrobe. However in most cases, many women typically where them one time and then get rid of them because they feel they may never wear them again.
This is a waste of money in many aspects. However, there are a lot of ways in which you can either recycle that old formal or make sure it gets used again.
If you have fond memories of your favorite dress, then it may be a good idea to turn it into something that you can keep for years to come. Turn it into a quilt, throw pillows or decorative picture.
If you own more than one formal dress that you have been fond of and want to do something really creative. Then why not turn all of them into a lovely quilt. Either for your own use or maybe for a close friend or relative that would enjoy it just as much. It will take some work to pull the dresses apart to do this. However, if you know how to sew, it will take no time at all. Simply use a seam ripper and pry apart each seam. Using the smallest part of the dress, measure the material to see how large of a square you might be able to cut out of that material. Make yourself a simple square template out of an old folder, with good scissors begin to cut out the squares of material from the dresses. Lay out a pattern with the individual squares. Other materials that you will need for this project will be quilt batting and possibly a large piece of fabric to create a back. Although, if you feel you have enough material from the dress or dresses, then extra fabric may not be necessary.
You could also make a memory frame out of the fabric from the dress as well. Using the above idea instead of making a completed quilt, you could make a smaller one that could be placed inside of a picture frame with a picture or several pictures of you in the dress. This is a great way to still have a piece of your fond memories and be able to share them with family and friends.
If you are not an avid quilter, making simple throw pillows from the fabric is an easy project as well. You simply need to measure out the material to the size desired, sew 3 of the sides together, then stuff with filler, sew closed and you have another piece of memory that you can keep on your bed.
If you do not wish to keep the dresses around or feel that you are not creative enough. When it is time, there are a number of great consignment shops that you can take your vintage formal dresses to. In many cases, the consignment shop will ask for about 10% of the price on the gown. This is to cover their costs of selling the dress for you. This is a good way for someone else to be able to enjoy the use of your formal.
