Outdoor Dog Kennel

Now that our new puppy has come to live with us I am thinking into the future and would like a kennel set up in the yard so I can give her some safe unsupervised outdoor time. There are a lot to choose from, here is what I found.
This is a kennel and not a crate. She is already being crate trained. The difference being a dog crate is basically a cage that she stays in to sleep at night or when no one is around to keep her safe and our possessions in tack. A kennel is a larger fenced in area, sometimes called a run, where a dog can hang outside under the same conditions as a crate.
The outdoor dog kennel is usually made from chain link fencing or steel wire (similar to a crate but stronger). The chain link construction seems to be probably stronger and longer lasting. Our chain link fence has lasted us twenty years and still going strong. The sizes cover a wide gamut starting at around 4 by 4 by 4 feet and increasing upwards to practically any size you need. Kennels are mainly designed for larger breeds so they begin at larger sizes.
In general the construction is done in panels that can be put together with household tools. The come with a single door or hinged panel for easy access. They can sit on the ground, a patio or some kind of flooring. I saw a travel size for a pickup truck bed that came with a tarp cover and wood flooring. If you are looking at placing one on a patio then consider one of the designs that have the bottom cross bars elevated on feet for easy cleaning. A pressured hose should do the trick.
Most do not come with a tarp cover for shade but I would not consider getting one without it. The pricing for the kennels start around 300 US dollars and continue to go up depending on construction material and size. The shade covers range from 85 and up based on the same criteria, material and size. Other accessories include anchor systems and floors.
There are certainly pros and cons to the dog kennel idea. The pros for me are portability to move it around the yard. The cons are all the extras are separate and added up come to a pretty hefty cost. For my large breed girl I will spend upwards to about a thousand dollars. These are certainly great products and provide an alternative to leaving a dog inside all day while keeping them safe. I am sure there are used ones that can be had for a fraction of the cost (that’s where I am going to begin looking). Although I did not look for it I am sure you can find some plans and if you are handy in construction you could build one for a song.
