Matching carp tackle to the baits used

Most carp anglers will have one, two, three and occasionally four carp rods depending on how many they choose to fish with during an angling session. These rods will be matched with suitable reels and in many cases spare spools will allow different breaking strains to be used for different waters. For example, a particularly weedy water with many snags might mean that stronger lines are appropriate.
Therefore, the biggest part of the carp tackle, the rod reel and line, together with the landing net, unhooking mat and bite alarms will all be pretty well used for all venues and different methods to catching the carp.
The thing that will change a lot from session to session, water to water and even during a particular fishing stint, will be the bait and the rig with which it is presented. It is the baits and rigs that will keep you visiting your local fishing tackle shop.
What bait to use will depend on conditions and the tactics being employed. If boilies are used with a favorite flavoring added, there will be a choice of how to present it. How far will it be popped up from the bed of the lake, what length hair should be used to make up the rig, will the hair be fixed in such a way that certain types of takes will ensure the hook is snagged automatically on the carp’s lip? Will a weighted bolt rig be better than a running lead?
It may be that a more natural bait is preferred, such as a worm or maggot. A worm is best fixed directly on to the hook and can still be a deadly method for taking carp. I have caught many small carp on maggots directly attached to the hook, and fancy having a go at using two or three on a size 20 hair rigged to a larger hook.
It is the terminal rigs that must be matched to the various different baits being used, and this is the area of a huge range of opinions. Remember though, presentation of the rigs is just as important as their design. It does not matter what new secret design of rig you are using or brand new flavoring added to your carp fishing bait – poor presentation will mean a blank days fishing.
