The Controversy of Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy

It’s not unusual for woman with very bad menopause or perimenopause symptoms to look for natural treatment options to deal with their symptoms. Traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) used to be standard treatment for menopause symptoms, but studies have shown that HRT carries with it significant health risks. HRT increases the risk of heart disease, breast cancer and blood clots. So, although HRT worked very well in treating menopause signs such as hot flashes, the health risks are too high for treating minor to moderate symptoms. So, since doctors and women have moved away from HRT, this unfortunately has left a lot of women searching for other treatment options.
One of the newer menopause treatments that is becoming quite popular recently since Oprah has talked about it is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). Suzanne Somers is another well know proponent of BHRT. BHRT is usually associated with the process of compounding which means that based on a doctor’s prescription a specific blend of hormones is “compounded” according to each woman’s hormonal needs; this is done at a compounding pharmacy. Proponents of the compounding process say that this makes the treatment better and more effective, because each woman is getting a medicine based on their specific needs. Opponents of compounding say there is a greater risk of human error, the health claims made by proponents have never been substantiated and these drugs are not FDA approved. In fact, the FDA has started cracking down on companies making unsubstantiated claims about BHRT.
BHRT is a plant based product that is molecularly identical to the hormone’s produced by the body. For some reason, people tend to believe that plant based products are safer than animal products or synthetic products, but this is a dangerous assumption. At this time the safety of compounded BHRT is not known, only time will tell if it is indeed safer than traditional HRT. For more information visit Signs of Menopause Guide.
