Keeping your body functioning well is a large part of maintaining good health as we age. Regular exercise and watching our diet can improve those later years and the time to get started is well before you hit retirement age. One of the indicators of good health and a smooth running body is where your glucose levels are. Any blood test done as part of a regular physical includes testing of glucose and normal glucose levels are indicated by where your number is after fasting and then having your blood drawn.

That fasting test is looking for a glucose level below 100 mg/dL as an indicator of how well your body regulates blood sugar. After fasting for eight hours your body should have controlled blood sugar levels down to this level and if you are not there, you may have a problem with how insulin is produced by your pancreas or you are insulin resistant from being overweight. More testing is normally done to confirm or rule out the results of one single test.

A good way to get your normal glucose level back is by losing weight and eating better. The two go hand in hand and often eating better, by leaving processed, high sugar, high fat foods alone can jump start weight loss. Add in regular exercise of some kind and getting to a lower weight and a blood sugar that rises and falls in normal ranges will not be far behind.

Regular walking is a good way to get started and adding weight bearing exercise of some kind is a good addition as you get in better shape. Weight lifting has the added benefit of toning muscles and increasing strength, besides increasing weight loss. Working at keeping in good shape before you reach retirement age is as important as saving money to provide for those years. Start now and enjoy those years instead of struggling through them.
