Hair Replacement Systems Offer Many Surgical Options

One of the benefits of working with hair replacement systems is that these programs give clients a variety of surgical options. Some of the most popular types of replacement surgery include hair plugs, microscopic hair transplants, and mini-grafts. Each type of surgery has its own benefits and drawbacks. Choosing the best option is truly an individual choice, which can only be made by the client after evaluating all his options.

Hair plug surgery involves taking small amounts of hair from the scalp where hair grows well and using this “donor hair” on areas affected by baldness. The donor plugs are then surgically inserted under the scalp, allowing the hair to continue to grow after surgery. One of the main drawbacks to this method is that customers look like dolls after completing the surgery until the hair begins to grow naturally.

Microscopic hair transplants typically work in a similar manner to hair plugs; however, the donor sites are typically smaller. Transplanting only 1 to 2 follicles at a time allows surgeons to establish a more natural growth pattern. Hair plug surgery typically transplants between 10 and 15 follicles at a time. While all surgery has risks, microscopic hair transplants tend to look less like doll hair than their hair plug counterparts.

Another type of surgery offered by hair replacement systems involves making mini-grafts. Like the other options, taking mini-grafts involves grafting donor hair and transplanting it onto other parts of the scalp. This procedure was one of the first types of replacement surgery and has some major drawbacks. Grafted hair may fall out due to poor blood flow and the hair often grows in with a different texture than the original donor hair.

While all of these surgeries involve grafting hair from a donor spot on the scalp and transplanting it onto areas where hair is being lost, each involves a slightly different procedure.  Most hair replacement systems specialize in one specific type of surgery. Do research about the procedure and the system before committing to one doctor.
