Black mold is a substance that can grow in your home if the right conditions are present. If there is darkness, a lack of ventilation, as well as moisture accumulating, then that is the perfect conditions for black mold or mildew to grow. You’ll want to get rid of the mold as soon as possible because it can lead to some damaging health effects such as lung damage, asthma, allergies, and even some memory loss. When it comes to removing black mold, you have two options. You can either hire a professional company to take care of it, or if the mold isn’t a large spot you can do it yourself. A company doing it will ensure they take the proper safety precautions so if you’re going to do it yourself, you’ll want to take some safety precautions as well to ensure that you are not exposed any further to the black mold spores.
The first thing you’ll want to do is protect your own body. You’ll want to purchase a surgical mask so that you do not breathe in any mold spores that may become airborne. You’ll also want to wear some sort of eye wear, just so the mold does not get into your eyes. You’ll also want to wear old clothes that have long sleeves so that your skin is protected. Finally, wear a pair of gloves when working near the mold.
You also want to protect your family from being exposed. You’ll want to seal off the room if there is a window, if not, then just be extra careful. You’ll want to put a fan in the window facing outward so that the airflow is outward, and not into the house spreading the mold around.
While you definitely can do some black mold removal projects on your own, you’ll definitely want to make sure that you take the proper safety precautions when you do.
