Flip flops are perhaps one of the most basic types of footwear, appearing originally in a thin rubber sole with two simple straps in a Y form running from the sides of the foot to the joint between the big toe. They are very popular in India where they are called “Hawaii Chappal,” but have gained immense notoriety all across the world, even and especially in big countries and continents like Australia, New Zealand, U.S.A., Brazil, the Pacific Islands and Southeast Asia.
From the time flip flops were first invented, they have come a long way and have elevated into a higher status in fashion. You either love or hate them, but most people who first hated them are now obsessed with them, putting up a collection of even up to a hundred and more! If you go to Hawaii, also called the “Flip Flop Country,” it would take a miracle not to fall in love with these summer buddies with their soft, comfortable, relaxed, fun and pretty appeal most islanders have gone crazy over.
Flip flops are fun and convenient. It is Hawaiian custom to remove your shoes when you enter a home. When you’re wearing flip flops, you don’t have to go through the cumbersome ritual of untying you shoelaces, taking off your shoes and your socks and then putting them all on again when you leave. With flip flops, all you have to do is flip them on and off you feet. Hassle-free and fun! And since Hawaii is a tropical country, wearing flip flops prevents your feet from getting sweaty and sticky. Flip flops are great in the summer and all-year long with almost everything in your closet looking fashionably care-free.
The choices in flip flops have greatly changed through time, too. The styles, colors and materials have developed into something more than a functional footwear. The designs are definitely more glamorous and versatile. You can choose from cheap, local brands to pricey, designer names depending on your style or budget. Rubber is no longer the only option. Flip flops now come in elegant leather and other fabulous materials. Brands like UGG, Crocs and Fitflops are just some of the prominent names in flip flops today but Havaianas flip flops seem to best all of them with their ultra soft, comfortable and stylish designs.
The term “flip flop” is a trademark protected brand-name in Germany, owned by GmbH and the Bernard Hummel Group. Havaianas, which means “Hawaiians” in Portuguese, is a Brazilian brand of flip flops which gained recognition in 1998 after the company developed a style for the World Cup that featured the Brazilian flag. But it has been around since 1962, and bore the slogan “Havaianas. The Real Ones” in the 1970s after other brands started creating knock-off versions of the famous brand.
Though health concerns and safety about wearing flip flops have become a prominent issue lately, there’s no denying they are still the hottest things in footwear to ever hit the fashion world. And when you’re in Hawaii or it’s the summer? It’s flip flops or nothing, Havaianas flip flops or otherwise.
