Needing a cake pan for a special event and finding out that they stopped making it ten years ago derails tons of baking projects every year. Luckily, there are a lot of places that you can buy these cake pans from and not have to spend a fortune. In this post I want to share the steps that I take when I need to find retired cake pans which works for me nearly every time.
I have a habit of scouring yard and garage sales for these cake pans. I know that this doesn’t help you right now, but if you are constantly having this problem you may be able to collect some of the more common ones by rummaging through a garage sale. I was able to find a Batman cake pan this last summer that has been retired for nearly 20 years, and I’ve used it four times since. So if you see a garage sale, stop and see what they have and you might be able to prevent this search in the future.
Finding one right away is fairly easy. I almost always start my search on eBay. There you will find cake pans in every shape, size, and character that you can imagine. Some simple searching should be able to turn up the one that you’re looking for easily. What you may encounter is that the pan you want costs $60 or $70! What to do then? See if you can trade with the seller. I’ve done this a few times and it’s worked well. If you have a collection of other cake pans in your pantry, take a quick inventory and ask the seller if they’ll take them instead or offer you a discount. eBay sellers are always looking to increase their inventory of stuff that’s relevant to their niche.
Don’t let the fact that the cake pan that you want isn’t made any more slow you down. Finding these is easy, and with the steps above you can save money and prevent it in the future.
