Choosing a Travel Coffee Mug

There’s an endless variety of travel coffee mugs available today. You might want one for

For each of these uses you will surely have a preference for a particular type of mug. Some like plastic, some like stainless steel and some refuse to use anything but lightweight titanium.

Travel mugs come in all shapes, sizes and colors. Here’s some things to think about when choosing your ultimate travel mug.

Shape and Size
A few years back, the bottom heavy “chubby mugs” were quite popular. These mugs refused to tip over unless you were forced to do some evasive maneuvering in your vehicle. Now that most cars have cup/mug holders, these mugs have been replaced by slightly top heavy mugs that taper down to fit into the cup holder.

Handles and Lids
Some prefer to have a handle on their mug and some do not, so there are mugs to suit both. All travel mugs have lids but some have a cover over the sip hole while others simply have a small uncovered hole. Unless you really shake up the mug, this will not splash hot coffee around.

If you are driving while drinking coffee, having a “one hand” mug is important. You won’t want to fuss with opening a sip hole cover as you drive. After all, it’s hard enough to drive, drink coffee and talk on your cell phone as it is!

Material and Thermal Properties
Mugs are commonly made from plastic, ceramic materials or stainless steel. Lightweight backpacking mugs may be made from titanium and have folding handles for better storage. Some prefer one material over another. Some mention that one material or the other may impact the taste of the coffee (or tea for that matter) so check this out when you first buy your mug.

Stainless steel is the most durable and sturdy of the mugs available today.
