Common Ways of Getting a Loan with Bad Credit

It can happen in anyone’s life; an accident, unexpected medical bill, divorce or other life-changing situation can cause a person to fall behind on their bills. When this occurs, not only does a person have to deal with late fees but their credit scores can also suffer. Trying to make the best of a less-than-perfect situation, when it comes time for a loan, people with blemished credit may think that getting a loan with bad credit is an impossible task; however as more and more people are facing foreclosures, loss of employment and bankruptcy, lenders are realizing this segment of the population needs servicing and are working with individuals to provide them with the money they need while helping borrowers rebuild their credit.

The most common option, prospective borrowers have, is to find a co-signer. This is a person who has a steady job, good credit history and can help a person with blemished credit qualify for a prime loan. Prime loans are the typical loans offered by banks and credit unions where interest on the loan is a set rate for all borrowers meeting the minimum loan qualifications.

Bad credit loans are available but are not necessary classified under those terms. A way of wording the term more discretely, when someone is interested obtaining a loan with imperfect credit, he or she may be instructed to apply for a sub-prime loan. Sub-prime loans usually carry higher interest rates than prime loans, but in some cases will not require a co-signer. An applicant must prove they have a steady job (usually employment with the same company for one to two years), a bank account and if requested, collateral. If interested in applying for a loan without a co-signer, sub-prime loans are a viable option; however with the higher interest rates incurred, it is best first to find a co-signer and try to become qualified for a loan offering the lowest interest rate and best overall repayment terms.
