Turn Off the TV, Eat as a Family, and Save Money

You would be amazed at how much people watch TV these days. For technology which is only a relatively few years old, it seems to have taken over our lives. As I write this, ‘Stargate’ is on in the corner of the room and I hardly notice it!
Don’t worry, this isn’t going to be some geeky post, even though I like the program. A lot!
TV accounts for nearly 2-5 hours of entertainment per day. On average 3.5 hours, that means at that rate for an average life time, 12 years of it are spent watching the box!
But I bet you didn’t think that it could be costing you more money than just the power to run it. Of course, if you were using some simple home accounting software, you probably know that already.
Now I can only speak for my kids, but when we have our tea in front of the television something strange happens – they forget to eat. They sit there and switch off. Just tonight we had a picnic in front of the television for a treat, and they sat and watched it, and I had to keep telling them to put food in their mouths, food which just was sitting there in their hands.
Now it’s not like they didn’t like the food. They loved it!
So how come that can waste money?
Well one of the problems is that a trigger that turns off the hunger mechanism is glucose and blood sugar. That’s why it’s a bad idea to give kids even one or two sweets before a meal because their appetite switches off. So, if they have a couple of mouthfuls of food, and then they start to watch the television, they will hit the glucose top out level before they get any more inside them.
And that means that before their plate is empty they are saying they are full. So what do you have to do with the food?
Throw it away. And anyone who follows a tight budget on something like online accounting software will know that if you throw food away you might as well throw money away.
So the simple answer is, apart from the occasional treat, turn the TV off. You will find that your kids eat the food you put in front of them, be a little healthier for it, and who knows, you might even find that people talk around the meal table and you will improve the value of your family life!
Get them off the tv and into eating
