A digital camcorder is an electronic device that allows a user to record video in digital form. The difference between newer digital camcorders and original video camcorders is that the digital ones use a digital signal instead of an analog signal. The main function of a camcorder is to interpret visual information that is seen and turn it into an electronic signal. With the older analog camcorders, the information is transcribed into a magnetic pattern that is transferred onto video tapes. With a digital camcorder, the same process is used, but instead of transcribing the information into a magnetic pattern, the information is processed and interpreted as 1s and 0s.

This is just like information stored on a computer. The reason that digital camcorders are becoming increasingly more popular is because the digital copy of visual information can withstand time better. Analog copies of information fade a little with each transfer or additional copies made. With digital technology, the information can be saved on a hard drive, flash storage media, or even transcribed onto computer discs multiple times with a reliable guarantee that every copy made will look almost the exact same as the original.

Choosing a high definition digital camcorder ultimately depends on the users own needs. Every user will use their digital camcorder for different things. Whether the camcorder will be used for personal needs such as recording memories for later remembrance or to start a career in the film industry, there are many camcorders that can be bought, all which have different features. With digital video, the information can also be loaded onto computers. Once on the computer, the video can be edited, copied, transferred to other media devices, or even spliced with other digital video to create a whole new product. With digital camcorders, the user is sure to get a clean and crisp image.

With the older taped based systems, all models looked pretty much the same. With the newer digital camcorders, there are plenty of models that differ in weight, size, video definition, even video or storage DVD storage format. There are even some digital camcorders that are small enough to easily fit inside of a travel bag. Digital camcorders that have built in hard drive storage can be bought in different storage sizes. Some camcorders can even be bought in a variety of colors, depending on the user preference.
