The key step to karaoke becoming so popular is the fact that it made the transition from karaoke bars to people’s own home. The personal karaoke machine has allowed people to start singing at their own pace, and once people are hooked they find it very hard to stop. People who weren’t as comfortable singing in front of people usually felt better about singing at home. And once they discovered how fun it was, they became devoted fans – just like many people before who came before them. So where karaoke was once thought to be a passing fad, the human love of music and the convenience of the karaoke system has made sure that it will stay for a long time to come.

Karaoke started in Japan and it struck quickly in popularity. If you think our love of the activity is intense, it is nothing compared to that of other foreign countries. Although we take karaoke seriously as well, people from other parts of the world really hold it in their hearts as a passion. For them, it is a way of life and they spend every moment thinking of their next karaoke excursion. It is not quite at that point here in North America, but that doesn’t mean it can’t get there. In fact, every day there are more and more karaoke fans who are falling in love with public singing. There are even people who would consider themselves to be professionals and they have their own karaoke circuits.

There was a definite time when karaoke as an activity was not well known and people had no idea what it was. This seemingly strange activity started in Japan and news of its existence started to travel slowly overseas. If you’ve been around long enough, you might remember the first time you and friends heard about karaoke and what it was all about. At the very best you might have thought it was novel idea, but it’s more likely you thought it seemed ridiculous and wondered why anyone would ever want do it. The first time you ever set foot into a karaoke bar you probably thought it was silly and resigned yourself to the fact that this fad would soon be gone.

No matter what people used to think about karaoke in the past, the fact remains that it simply has not gone easily away. In fact it could be said that karaoke is more popular than ever and now it will not die off. Karaoke has become firmly entrenched in our own culture as it’s no longer associated with foreign countries and their pastimes. We have seemingly adopted the activity not only into our own culture, but into our homes as well, and there is no end in sight.
