There is a new Bop It on the market. Since its creation in the mid 1990’s Bop It games, in one form or another, have been hugely successful. They are highly addictive and improve the player’s memory, concentration and reflexes. Over the intervening years, a few different versions have been released and ready for this Christmas, yet another is available. But is there much difference between them? If you are thinking of buying one, here is a quick check list to help you in the right direction.
- The Bop It game is an electronic reaction game. It you are not into driving yourself to distraction trying to beat a toy, steer clear.
- It is a ‘Simon Says’ style game. The toy tells you which of its many levers to find and pull, twist etc and you have a minuscule amount of time to do so. Different versions have different numbers of levers. The fewer the better for younger children.
- The game is primarily only for one player. It can encourage competition between more than one player as they can try and beat each other’s high score. However, while one player is playing the other is not. In the Extreme 2 version a multi player option is added.
- To buy the latest version you are looking for just the Bop It variety. This is confusingly the same as the original version but you will be hard pressed to find an older version other than on Ebay or at a very high price on Amazon.
- The latest version has only three levers – pull it, twist it and bop it, although there is a new command – shout it. This is the first game to feature this new order where you have to shout into the microphone in time to score a point.
- For a more difficult version for older children or adults, the Extreme 2 version may be the one for you. This features five levers, including spin it and twist it, so you have even more things to confuse you.
- Party Bop It Out is only available on the new version. In this fun twist on the game, you get to Bop It on various parts of your body, rather than the standard hand actions.
- If you want a game that gets more difficult the better you get at it, stick with the new version or Extreme Download. Here more difficulty levels are unlocked as your high score increases.
- If you want to be able to put your own music or beats onto the toy because you are likely to get sick of the factory settings, choose the Extreme Download version which comes with a USB cable for you to do just that.
Use the above checklist to give you some food for thought when considering a Bop It game purchase.
