Research the Tenor Sax Market Before Buying

Since the invention of the Saxophone in the 1840s, the alto and tenor sax has dominated the marketplace. As jazz progressed into the mainstream music of swing, the tenor took hold as the primary instrument of choice, along with it’s counterpart the trumpet.

Whether an artist wanted to create a full bodied or a light-toned jazz sound, this medium sized horn has been in popular demand since it’s beginnings.

The first piece of advice when looking for this popular horn is to decide whether you are looking for a decent sounding but cheap horn, or a pristine well priced horn . If you are planning on using it for other than personal enjoyment then you should go for the second choice.

The next important question is, “are you looking for a new or used instrument?” At first glance, a new horn would obviously have more appeal to the buyer. New pads, with perfect lacquer or plating. With a new instrument you know that you are getting the latest technology. However, with the latest technology comes the mass production, substituting quantity for quality in some cases. The obvious down-side is that a new horn may cost more than a used one despite mass production.

Quality used horns are something to admire. More ornate than the horns of today, the sound of a quality handmade instrument from the past can be hard to beat. If you decide on a used instrument remember that you are buying a horn that is in questionable condition, usually with no warranty. If you are looking for a vintage horn then there are many sites available on the internet to find that Selmer or Mark VI you’ve been looking for.
