Hosting a costume party for Halloween is almost commonplace nowadays. Everyone already has a costume in mind that they plan to wear so it is easy for the guests to get ready and show up in crazy outfits. A more unique idea is throwing a masquerade party for Halloween instead.
A masquerade party is identified by the type of mask that guests are expected to wear. Instead of scary masks, attendees are expected to wear masks that only cover the face (usually only parts of the face) but are themed in some way. You can make or buy masquerade masks, but they should be easily identifiable from the standard Halloween masks sold in stores.
The stereotypical masquerade mask looks like the symbol for the Phantom of the Opera. It is white with holes for both eyes and covers about half of the face. Most masks that would be worn at a party will be more exciting with colors and decorations such as feathers and glitter.
The main goal of a masquerade mask is to disguise the wearer’s identity while still allowing them mobility and communication at the party. This is why half face masks are familiar and popular. They allow the guest to have full communication because their mouth is uncovered.
In addition to being a fun change of pace to the standard costume party, a masquerade usually allows the guests to be much more comfortable. A lot of Halloween costumes are quite warm, bulky, or uncomfortable but at a masquerade party, most of the costume is the mask. Guests usually wear matching accessories to enhance their mask and persona, but the most extreme flare that you can expect to see is a small over-the-shoulder cape.
All in all a masquerade party is fun anytime, but your attendance rate will likely be much higher around Halloween when people are expecting it. It allows some fun freedom from the daily grudge while not being considered too wild for any crowd.
