The astronomical rise in popularity of high definition TV has coincided with the switch to digital television broadcasts and the cost of HDTVs plummeting. High definition TV gets it name due to the mega high resolutions produced by HDTVs. The pictures produced by HD TVs are made up of many rows of pixels of light. The more rows that a TV is capable of displaying the higher the definition the TV is capable of.

Terms frequently used when referring to high definition televisions are 720p, 1080i and 1080p. These refer to the formats that the television is capable of displaying, where the number is refers to the horizontal rows of pixels and the letter the scanning mode. The higher the number the more rows of pixels and higher resolution. The scanning method is the way that the images are refreshed. Interlaced scanning refreshes alternate rows of pixels and progressive refreshes all rows, the result is that progressive produces less image flicker.

Televisions which are 1080p capable are frequently referred to as Full HD TV because they can display images at the highest resolutions and use the best scanning method. HD Ready is also another label that the television industry uses to describe high definition televisions that are capable of the lesser 720p, 720i and 1080i formats. So if you are to appreciate HD TV at the best quality possible then to start with you are going to require a Full HD TV.

In order to utilize a Full HD TV to its maximum you are going to require an input device that is capable of producing a 1080p signal for the television to display. This is not as easy as you might think and may involve more expense. You may think that subscribing to your favourite HD TV channels will let you use a Full HD TV to its full 1080p capacity, but this is not the case as most HD TV channels are broadcast in 720p or 1080i. Until TV companies start broadcasting in 1080p the only way of fully utilizing a Full HD TV is by viewing BluRay disks, 1080p camcorders, Xbox 360, PS3 or other 1080p capable devices such as PCs.
