The stream, diverted from its original path beneath the mill, continues to flow through and with the sunlight that streams onto the mill at the end of the ravine has created a tiny sub-tropical zone with palm trees and fronds growing abundantly. Very surprisingly, a family still lives among the trees next to the mill, their hen houses and stores being simple wooden constructions built around or propped against the trees. There is an old woman there who may greet you and invite you to taste the leathery pods from the carob tree that grows across the path to the house. It is a strangely idyllic place, though their lives are, obviously, very hard. It is certainly off-the-beaten-track and seems a thousand miles from the hotels, cafés and restaurants just a kilometre (1/2 mile) back up the ravine.
