I remember standing on the glacier-fed river of Salzburg, Austria one night with the lights of the city reflecting off the river. No low light function. No picture. I remember being in Antelope Canyon in Arizona trying to photograph the one shaft of sunlight cutting through the dark canyon. I remember flying over the island of Kuau’i on a cloudy day. I remember being in King Tut’s tomb trying to photograph the mummies in low light with no flash allowed. I also remember trying to photograph the paintings and hieroglyphics on the wall that were 4,000 years old, again with no flash allowed. I remember being in the catacombs of various other temples of Egypt like Karnak and Luxor trying to get pictures of the hieroglyphics there only to encounter the same problems. I remember being in the great pyramid of Egypt hoping to capture the inside of the tomb and the shaft leading to the tomb. No luck. Oh, and I also remember seeing squirrel monkeys flying 200 ft above the ground in the Amazon jungle, only I didn’t have a camera suited for action shots. I could count even more once-in-a-lifetime shots I’ve missed because I didn’t have the right camera.

All I’m saying is don’t make the same mistake I did.  I have since made up for these shots, taken many photos and created picture poetry.  However, it’s not necessary to miss these shots and especially if you’re in situations where there are great pictures to be taken. The Nikon D7000 beats almost every other comparable camera out there on the market and takes incredible photos in low light. Make sure you have a camera like the Nikon D7000 with you so you don’t miss pictures like I did.

The more accurately you can get the chuck to sit the better. When you work with wood and the chuck is changing places, you can get very crooked spins. When you are working with faceplate things, hollowing things out can be a bit tricky.

Figure out what a uniform wall thickness will be. Something held by a chuck can sometimes come off. A faceplate will hold things better. If you have a bump, the thing can sometimes go flying off. Be patient and careful and be very careful. Go gently on the first few times around when the item is not quite in round yet so the item doesn’t go flying off the lathe. That can be a bit scary to have them go flying. Carve carefully and don’t be afraid to take your time.
