Perfume Review: Notorious by Ralph Lauren

This perfume was launched in 2008, the name is taken from a movie of 1946 by Hitchcock. The bottle is very similar to the one of the other Ralph Lauren perfume, Romance, but with different notes, like (according to the Ralph Lauren website): bergamot, pink pepper, cosmos chocolate, white peony, carnation, iris, patchouli, vanilla and musk.
The opening notes are very fruity, with a dominant fresh note like orange in the first 10 minutes. The middle notes are more floral, completing the citrus of the opening, with Cosmos chocolate, which is actually a flower which gives a vanilla aroma. In the background there is also a more watery floral note, like peony, which becomes more and more dominant as time passes. Towards the base notes there is a distinct trace of carnation, not so dominant like (for example) in the Nina Ricci perfume L’Air du Temps, but still sharp enough to be noted on the skin. As the base notes develop, they take a vanilla flavour, mixed with musk. Flowers are now minimal, with cosmos flowers in the background, almost imperceptible.
This is fragrance is suitable for the whole year: the orange gives a summer style, although not extremely refreshing, and the intense florals give a winter aroma.
It’s perfectly suitable for a daily use, as it smells clean and professional in the office, not extremely intrusive. For an evening use, unlike its name suggests, it’s not extremely notorious, but its summer style makes it great for informal occasions, where the intention is feeling fresh and clean rather than drawing attention.
On the romantic side, this Notorious perfume by Ralph Lauren doesn’t stand out, as the most intense notes are those of vanilla, which lack of those addictive quality of seducing perfumes. The age range is fairly broad, from 25 and 60 years, giving its best between 30 and 40.

The Long Tail by Wired editor Chris Anderson was a smash hit book back in 2007. It argued that instead of the monolithic and centrally controlled products of the past – think Hollywood blockbusters – the future belonged to millions of tiny niches. The old central control of big industrial corporations would be unseated by a “web 2.0″ of consumer created content. The theory was that consumer choice had been artificially stifled by the restrictions of technology that limited both the number of creators and the distribution channels available. And what happened? Well blogging came and went out of mainstream media consciousness and then major blockbusters like James Cameron’s “Avatar” broke all box office records. So the long tail has proven frustratingly elusive to catch, has it not?

Well think again. Today we seem to be witnessing a both/and situation. Blockbusters and shared cultural experiences will always have huge power because people are social animals and love common TV programs and common cultural reference points. This explains why hits such as “The Wire” are universally popular among certain social niches, to the extent these kind of commonly appreciated cultural products are satirized in “Stuff White People Like” and other blogs. But at the same time, there has been an enormous social explosion of user-generated content. Youtube, Facebook and Twitter are truly redefining the rules of internet communication and marketing.

Much traditional self-help literature has been about motivating the ordinary individual to step up and achieve great things, to become the hero that overcomes insuperable odds. This heroic approach is at the heart of excellent motivational classics such as the Anthony Robbins classic “Awaken the Giant Within”. The amazing potential that the internet world provides means that everyone can find their own niche and successfully monetize it using affiliate marketing and other advertising tools. The gap between the American self help dream and the ability to fulfil it has never been closer. The internet has revealed and promoted a million niches in art,literature, film and entertainment. Major corporations are simply not geared to exploit these opportunities. The Long Tail truly lives and is there for the pulling.
