For many of us who live near the shore our home decor centers around the sea and an ocean motif. We may have rope designs in throw pillows in the family room or perhaps lantern style lighting throughout the house. Our bedrooms reflect our love of all things nautical by the use of starfish as a wall decor or a trunk at the foot of our beds.

Nautical bedding is one of the most effective ways to bring our beach environment inside. During the summer months we generally select the lighter shades of blues for our decor. Red, white and blue are traditional colors for the ship’s theme. After Memorial Day the accent is on the lighter colors which we enjoy throughout the summer. However, after Labor Day the tendency is to trend towards darker shades. One of the easiest ways to change our bedroom decor is with careful selection of bedding.

As mentioned, using a light blue shade during the summer is quite common. If that should be the preference, it is suggested that one look for a comforter or bedding set that incorporates a smaller dark red or brown stripe.
