Dentists are considered professionals who deal with maintaining the health of the teeth and mouth structures. Like a physician, a dentist is licensed to diagnose, administer the test and provide advice to patients. A dentist can be a member of a medical institution or a solo practitioner. All dentists have completed a course at dental school accredited by a state government. Dental school graduates must obtain a license to operate in their state.

A Tulsa dentist can create a dental care plan for his patients. He can also conduct dental procedures such as filling cavities, tooth extraction, cleaning and restoring teeth structures.  There are dentists who specialize in performing gum and tooth bone surgery. A dentist has the authority to give anesthetics when necessary and make medication prescriptions. In performing daily tasks, a dentist needs specific tools like brushes, forceps, mouth mirrors, probes and scalpels. There is always a risk to be exposed to infectious diseases and germs, so a dentist must always wear masks, gloves and even safety goggles while examining or treating the patient. Dentists usually work in an office by themselves or with staff. Dental clinic staff may include dental hygienist, assistants and receptionists. They assist the dentist with dental procedure and administrative functions. A Tulsa dental clinic is equipped with different equipment such as dental chairs, lasers, x-ray machines and scanners.

There are different types of dentists according to their area of expertise. A huge number of dental professionals are general dentists. They are called such because they are knowledgeable and skilled at handling common dental issues. Another group of specialized dentists is the orthodontists. Their main expertise lies in designing and applying braces to straighten teeth formation. Other specialty dentists are Oral and maxillofacial surgeons and periodontists. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons deal with operating problems in the mouth, jaw, neck and head while periodontists conduct gum and bone treatment.
