Weird and Wonderful Vending Machines

When it comes to vending machines, Japan has us beat hands down. It seems there’s nothing the Japanese won’t try to sell out of a vending machine. A few years ago they even had machines hawking used school panties. Although these machines were made illegal, apparently they can still be found. Porn is commonly vended out of machines in Japan, but they also have more mundane offerings such as electronic devices, shoes, socks, men’s ties, fresh flowers, eggs, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables and beer. Japan seems to be the place to be if you’re a vending entrepreneur.

I did find a couple cool interesting machines outside of Japan. Some aren’t ‘real’ vending machines, they’re more statement pieces or art installations, but they’re fun anyway. The first one is a statement piece; the very cleaver Body O Matic vending machine was created by an Australian advertising company to highlight workplace safety. The machine is full of hands, feet, legs and arms prominently displayed in a glass fronted vending machine. The next example is an art installation piece done by the artists Kublitz and Yarisal called The Anger Release Machine, this machine has china cups, plates and little figures that fall with a satisfying crash when they are ‘vended’.

Here in the US, the Standard Hotel chain has recently paired with swimsuit manufacturer Quicksilver to vend swimsuits and board short at their hotels and iPods and other small electronic devices are being sold out of machines. We’re still a long way from Japan in terms of vending offerings, but slowly and surely, more and more things are being sold out of machines. There is still a lot of upside to the vending business here; I don’t know that we’ll ever get to the point of selling eggs or fresh vegetables out of machines, but who knows.
