Synthetic diamonds are man made gem stones that are nearly identical in appearance to a real diamond. They are manufactured through a scientific process. They are comparable or better in strength and durability to geologically occurring diamonds and significantly less expensive.

There are several different ways the synthetic diamonds can be created. High pressure and high temperature was traditionally the method of choice because of its low cost, particularly for industrial diamonds. Chemical vapor deposition is another common way and is often referred to as a CVD diamond. In Chemical vapor deposition, carbon is sprayed into a chamber in conditions of pressure and heat. The chamber contains a ’seed’ diamond, and larger high quality diamonds are grown on this substrate over a period of a few days. The look and quality of synthetic diamonds will vary and some will be better looking than others, much like authentic diamonds. Some of the high quality synthetic diamonds are easily passed off as real. It can be very difficult for an untrained professional to tell the difference between synthetic and real diamonds. Ultraviolet light is often the only way to verify the authenticity of a stone. When synthetic diamonds became widely available it caused some alarm within the industry because of the very genuine looking reproductions.

The synthetic diamonds are available in a number of different colors and gemstone cuts. Some colors that are available include clear white, yellow, orange, blue, brown and green. Special tools are needed to cut the synthetic diamonds because of their extreme hardness.

Synthetic diamonds offer an alternative for those who want the look of the real thing without the price tag. The stones can be set in all kinds of jewelry pieces and look just as good as an authentic diamond. The different cuts and sizes offer plenty of choices for anybody looking for just the right piece of inexpensive jewelry.
