Advantages of Corrugated Metal Siding

Corrugated metal siding is a material most commonly seen covering warehouses and light industrial buildings all over the country.  It is immediately recognizable due to the distinct raised ridges in the surface of the metal, known as ‘corrugations’, just like the rippled surface exposed when the outer paper is peeled from a piece of cardboard.  The ridges, or corrugations’, provide rigidity and surface strength to the otherwise flexible metal.

These days, however, corrugated metal siding panels are increasingly seen in other applications than warehouses and such.  Aside from churches, where it’s useful due to the ability to form it into multi-story lengths without seams, it is more and more often seen in residential architecture.  Owing to improvements in the ability to custom form the material and enhancements in coating technologies, it is now widely known as ‘architectural siding’.

Aside from its ability to be formed easily, this material has the advantage of being virtually impervious to fire.  It’s also extremely easy to maintain and to keep clean, meaning that its brightly colored surfaces can be kept lustrous with only the application of an occasional hosing down or maybe a once over with soapy water on a soft brush.

It is also quite durable.  Some manufacturers provide a 50 year warranty on their products.  Although it is susceptible to dents and dings, in ordinary service these are generally rare, but if you are located in a hail storm prone part of the country, you would probably choose to have steel, rather than aluminum metal siding.

While steel is the preferred material where potential denting is an issue, aluminum corrugated metal siding is uniquely desirable for use in coastal areas.  In such areas, salt corrosion in the air can attack steel materials, but on aluminum it forms an oxide that helps to prevent deterioration of the metal itself.
