Utilizing A Hand Winch

Hand winches are excellent tools to have around when driving off road, working on a farm, or driving through bad weather, or on bad roads.  It allows someone to move heavy objects, remove a car from mud, a ditch, or any other position it may be stuck in. Besides the winch several other tools are needed to tow out any vehicle.  These are straps, cable, several clamps, and heavy duty gloves.

The straps are used to secure a winch to a tree in order to secure it.  By using straps instead of cable or chain the life of the tree will not be endangered by the cable or chains cutting into it.  Straps are wider and tend to disperse the weight and not do any damage to the tree.  Next unwind all of the cable and prepare to feed it into the winch.  On most models this means the clutch and safety lock need to be disengaged.  Next use the chains and clamps to secure an anchor point on what is being towed out.  It is wise to use more than one anchor point with a small angle between the two chains.  This will help spread out the load weight, but a small angle is important for safety reasons.  After these points are secured a strap should be clamped over the cable near the chains so if a cable breaks then the dangerous force is redirected.  After everything is secured the hard work begins.  Winching by hand is hard work and takes a significant amount of time to move anything very far.  Working in a team of two people will make work go much faster since the burden will be shared.

Using this type of winch is not very efficient, but will accomplish any job that is needed as far as towing, lifting, or maneuvering goes.  These are usually the least expensive types of winches out there and are very durable resulting in an extremely long life.  For more information on choosing a winch that will stand the test of time, visit the Hand Winch Center.
