Should You Buy A Used Diesel Automatic

If you are looking for a good used car then you really have two options, you can either get a gasoline engine are a diesel.  Of course there are such things as hybrids and electrics but they are few and far between in the used market so you probably won’t run into very many of these.  For years, the best used diesel automatics were Mercedes because they were built so well and really stood the test of time.  Now, though, there are several other makes which deserve your consideration.

When looking at a used diesel car it is important that the engine is in great shape.  The first thing to look for is any leakage on the engine or drips of black oil underneath.  Diesels operate at very high internal cylinder pressures and thus they are notorious for blowing out head gaskets.  Water or oil leaking around the base of the head may indicate that the gasket is worn out or blown.  If you see this problem be sure to have a mechanic check it out.

The best way to know you are getting good diesel is to have a diesel mechanic check it out. With a gasoline engine the piston compression is really quite easy to check at home with a cheap gauge.  A diesel compression checker is quite a bit more expensive because the pressures are so much higher. It takes a high compression because the fuel is not ignited by a spark as in a gasoline engine.  Instead, it is exploded by heat and pressure when it is injected into the cylinder as the piston reaches top dead center.

Another major component to check is the transmission itself.  When you text drive it be sure there is no slippage as you take off and as you accelerate to passing speed and the transmission downshifts. You should also do a visual inspection of the tranny to check for any leaks as resealing can be very expensive.  If you want more tips on buying and maintaining cars visit Available Car Sales and have your questions answered.
