Garages and Insulating Them

During the past few years, Americans have begun to completely change the way they view their garage. Originally designed for and primarily used to park cars or outdoor lawn equipment like a lawn mower; many garages are now used for storage space to keep all the extra bins and boxes or appliances no longer leaving enough room to actually park a car. Some homeowners have also finished their garage with paint, carpeting and furniture, turning it into another room of the house.

If you choose to finish your garage for use as living space, it is imperative to properly consider how your large garage door is insulated. Proper insulation will allow your garage to be used at a comfortable temperature year round while reducing energy costs. During the winter, correctly insulating the garage door will prevent cold air from slipping into the house underneath the door or other cracks. Though simply insulating the garage will not make it as warm as the house, it will be easier to keep at a comfortable temperature through use of a space heater. During the summer, having a garage insulated correctly can help it stay a little cooler instead of heating up in the hot sun. Without insulation, the vinyl siding on a garage will attract and retain heat making the space up to 30 degrees hotter than inside your house.

A popular choice for insulation in garage doors is poly insulation, often with foil backing but available without foil backing. This can be easily installed by a homeowner with little research and preparation. First prepare your door by gluing two-inch wide insulation strips on each end and in the middle of the garage door. Then install the reflective insulation inside the panels of your door arranged end to end. The insulation should be glued to the strips that have already been attached to the door. The reflective side should face the door and not the outside towards your garage.
